Released by Malang Customs, Ayung Sportindo Exports Safety Jackets to Singapore
Ayung Sportindo, a small business based in Malang, East Java, has taken another big step in its journey by exporting 13.75 kilograms of safety jackets to Singapore. This export, completed on September 10th, was made possible through the Shopee Export platform, with significant support from the Malang Customs Office. It might seem like just another shipment, but for Ayung Sportindo, it represents much more—a significant milestone in their export journey and proof that even small businesses can go global.
Ayung Sportindo, which has been producing various types of workwear since 1997, including safety jackets, was able to achieve this with the help of the Malang Customs Office’s Export Clinic program. This initiative is designed to help micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) like Ayung Sportindo develop their export capabilities. According to Dwi Prasetyo Rini, Head of Counseling and Information Services at Malang Customs, the program is part of their commitment to helping export-oriented MSMEs grow and contribute to the national economy. “We are constantly working on encouraging MSMEs to make their first export to support optimal economic growth,” Rini explained during the export release event held at Ayung Sportindo’s workshop in Kedungkandang, Malang.
The journey for Ayung Sportindo hasn’t been easy, but it’s a testament to what dedication, hard work, and the right support can achieve. Ayung Sportindo is a proud participant in the Export Mentoring Programme (EMP) of 2024, a three-month training program aimed at preparing MSMEs for the global market. This program, organized by the Export Clinic at Malang Customs, is specifically designed to tap into the potential of small businesses. It provides free, customized training tailored to meet the specific needs of each MSME, helping them navigate the complex world of exporting.
For businesses like Ayung Sportindo, programs like these are a game-changer. Learning how to export goods, especially in international markets, is not something that can be done overnight. There are regulations to understand, logistics to manage, and market research to conduct. However, with the guidance and expertise provided through the EMP, MSMEs are given a solid foundation to start their export journey with confidence.
Before joining the EMP, Ayung Sportindo had already made a name for itself in the local market, producing high-quality safety jackets, vests, uniforms, and other workwear. However, breaking into the international market presented new challenges. Asrul Tsani, the owner of Ayung Sportindo, knew that competing globally would require not just quality products but also the ability to understand the international demand, navigate export regulations, and build relationships with overseas buyers.
The EMP came at the perfect time for Ayung Sportindo. Through the program, they were able to gain invaluable insights into the export process, from dealing with customs regulations to understanding foreign market preferences. The training also provided practical tips on how to leverage e-commerce platforms like Shopee Export, which ultimately facilitated their first shipment to Singapore.
Exporting, especially for a small business, is not just about packing up products and shipping them overseas. It involves meticulous planning, compliance with international trade laws, and understanding the complexities of foreign markets. But Ayung Sportindo, with the backing of Malang Customs, successfully navigated these challenges and made their first export to Singapore a reality.
This export to Singapore wasn’t just about sending out a batch of safety jackets. It was a moment of pride and a testament to what can be achieved when MSMEs receive the right support. It’s also proof that Indonesian MSMEs have the potential to compete on the international stage. Asrul and his team are now part of a growing number of small businesses that are expanding beyond the local market and reaching global customers.
The success of Ayung Sportindo also reflects the positive impact of Malang Customs’ commitment to supporting MSMEs. By creating programs like the Export Clinic and EMP, they are providing small businesses with the tools they need to succeed in the global market. These initiatives not only help individual businesses like Ayung Sportindo but also contribute to the overall growth of Indonesia’s economy by promoting exports.
Ayung Sportindo’s journey is an inspiring one. From humble beginnings as a small-scale producer of workwear in Malang to making its mark in international markets, the business has come a long way. And while their export to Singapore is a significant milestone, it’s clear that this is just the beginning of their global journey. With the skills and knowledge they’ve gained through the EMP and the continued support from Malang Customs, Ayung Sportindo is well-positioned to take on even bigger markets in the future.
The key takeaway from Ayung Sportindo’s experience is that small businesses don’t have to limit themselves to local markets. With the right mindset and support, they can tap into global demand and grow their business in ways they never thought possible. Programs like the Export Clinic show that with the proper training and resources, even MSMEs can successfully navigate the complex world of exports.
For Ayung Sportindo, the export to Singapore is a proud achievement, but they’re not stopping there. Asrul and his team are already looking toward the future, exploring new markets and finding ways to grow their international presence. Whether it’s through Shopee Export or other e-commerce platforms, they’re committed to expanding their reach and continuing to put Indonesian-made products on the global map.
As Ayung Sportindo continues to grow and succeed in international markets, they serve as a shining example for other MSMEs in Indonesia. Their story proves that with hard work, persistence, and the right support, even small businesses can go global. It’s a reminder that the opportunities are out there—sometimes you just need a little push to take that first step.
