Local Small Business Goes International, Selling Premium Jackets All the Way to Russia!
Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) have always been key players in supporting the nation’s economy. One inspiring story is that of Ayung, an entrepreneur from Malang, East Java, who has been in the jacket manufacturing business since 1997. His business, Ayung Sportindo, has managed to go global, with his premium jackets even reaching customers in Russia.
Ayung Sportindo is one of the many examples of how MSMEs can thrive, even in international markets. Ayung was invited to share his success story and business insights during the “Dissecting the Online Jacket Business” session at the Pasar idEA 2019 event in Jakarta, on Sunday, August 18, 2019. Speaking to an eager audience, Ayung shared three key principles that have helped his business stay afloat and grow over the years.
Segmenting the Market: Targeting Premium Buyers
One of Ayung’s key strategies is segmenting the market. He’s been able to identify and focus on a specific customer base. “I only produce premium quality products,” Ayung explained, reflecting on his approach to business. He mentioned that, in Indonesia, the market can generally be divided into three segments. Around 50% of people, according to him, prefer affordable products, even if that means compromising on quality.
Another 25% of the market is willing to pay for better quality products, but they still expect reasonable prices. And then there’s the last 25%, a more exclusive group that cares only about quality, regardless of the price tag. “This group doesn’t care about how much it costs as long as the quality is excellent. For me, that’s the segment I enjoy working in,” Ayung confidently stated.
By focusing on this premium market, Ayung has been able to carve out a niche for himself, creating high-quality jackets that stand out in the industry. His dedication to maintaining high standards has allowed him to build a reputation for premium products, which has ultimately led to international opportunities.
Building and Maintaining Relationships with Customers
The second tip Ayung shared is the importance of communication with customers. For him, keeping in touch with both new and existing customers is crucial. “Never underestimate the power of maintaining a good relationship with your clients,” he emphasized. Whether it’s through timely follow-ups, responding to customer feedback, or simply keeping them informed about new products, staying connected has helped Ayung build long-term relationships with his customers.
In fact, his customer-centric approach has been one of the key reasons his business continues to thrive. He believes that by keeping old customers happy and continuously seeking out new ones, his business can maintain steady growth. It’s all about striking a balance between nurturing your existing customer base and expanding it.
Expanding to International Markets
Over the years, Ayung’s dedication to quality and customer service has paid off in remarkable ways. His jackets have made their way to international markets, proving that MSMEs can indeed go global. One of his proudest achievements was receiving a bulk order from a university in Russia, which helped put Ayung Sportindo on the map as a global player in the jacket industry.
This success didn’t happen overnight. It took years of hard work, consistency, and a commitment to providing top-quality products. Ayung’s premium jackets also found their way to Malaysia, where he supplied one of the country’s multinational automotive companies. This marked another milestone for Ayung Sportindo, showcasing the potential for local businesses to tap into foreign markets if they focus on delivering exceptional value.
Facing Challenges and Staying Resilient
Like any business, Ayung has faced his fair share of challenges along the way. From navigating competition in the local market to figuring out how to meet the demands of international clients, it hasn’t always been an easy ride. However, his passion for the business and determination to succeed have kept him going.
One of the major hurdles Ayung had to overcome was scaling his production to meet international demand while maintaining the high quality that his brand is known for. Balancing growth with quality control is no small feat, but Ayung’s commitment to excellence has enabled him to overcome this challenge. He believes that it’s essential to stay true to your brand’s values, no matter how big your business grows.
The Importance of Innovation in Business
Ayung also emphasized the importance of innovation in keeping his business relevant. Over the years, he has adapted to changes in the industry, whether that means embracing new materials, using more efficient manufacturing processes, or leveraging digital platforms to reach a wider audience.
In today’s competitive business landscape, standing still is not an option. Ayung understands the need to stay ahead of the curve and is always looking for ways to improve his products and operations. By staying open to new ideas and continuously improving, Ayung has ensured that his business remains competitive both in the local market and internationally.
Lessons for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
For those looking to follow in his footsteps, Ayung has some advice. First, he encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to be clear about their target market. By identifying the segment you want to serve, you can focus your efforts and resources more effectively. Second, never underestimate the importance of communication. Keeping your customers happy and informed is key to building a loyal customer base. And finally, always strive for quality. Whether you’re targeting the budget market or the premium segment, maintaining high standards will set you apart from the competition.
Ayung’s journey is a testament to the potential of MSMEs to succeed, even on a global scale. His story shows that with the right strategy, a focus on quality, and a dedication to customer service, it’s possible to take a local business and turn it into an international success. So, for any small business owners out there wondering if they can make it big, take it from Ayung – anything is possible if you stay focused, resilient, and committed to delivering the best.
